Appropriate Vulnerability in Mentoring

The Session

In this session we will be…

  • Defining vulnerabilities and exploring the impact of those on us and others.
  • Helping participants to develop a greater self-awareness of their own vulnerabilities and potential vulnerabilities that are encountered in a mentoring relationship.
  • Exploring the some of the issues in establishing and maintaining boundaries in a mentoring relationship and offering a range of strategies to deal with this.

The Facilitators 

Sally Nash

Revd Dr Sally Nash is Associate Minister at Hodge Hill Church in Birmingham, Director of the Midlands Institute for Children Youth and Mission (, and Team Leader for St John’s College Nottingham. Sally has written books and articles on a range of topics including ministry, youth and children’s work, paediatric spiritual care, shame and vulnerability.

Emma Sykes

Revd Emma Sykes is Associate Missioner at St Michael’s Church in Boldmere, Leadership Specialist (with a focus on young vocations) with CPAS and Assistant Diocesan Director of Ordinands for Birmingham Diocese. She has experience of mentoring a variety of different people in a range of contexts and has written a Grove booklet on Vulnerability and Leadership.
