Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe presented by The Willmore Singers

Edgbaston Old Church is pleased to announce a gala performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe presented by The Willmore Singers to fund raise for ongoing church repair costs. Iolanthe will be performed in church.

The Willmore Singers is a small company producing high quality chamber music, opera and theatre with a commitment to community outreach and widening participation. Members of the Edgbaston Old Church choir are delighted to be joining The Willmore Singers for Iolanthe.

One of Gilbert and Sullivan’s more abstract operas, Iolanthe lampoons the absurdities of British politics in a clash between the House of Peers and a host of immortal Fairies. When half-fairy Strephon falls of Phyllis (the Lord Chancellor’s ward) the House is in uproar, and supernatural interference from an enraged Fairy Queen only complicates matters. Nightmares, bemused sentries and love-triangles ensue, in a typically topsy-turvy story set to Sullivan’s timeless music.

A glass of wine, during the interval, is included in the price of the ticket, available to buy on the door. At only £10 for adults and £8 for students this is a performance not to be missed.
