Small Heath Inferfaith Marian Symposium

‘Mary the Mother of Jesus”

28 May 2016, 9:30am-5:00pm

The Hussainia Youth Committee and All Saints’ Church, Small Heath, would like to extend a warm and cordial invitation to our forthcoming Marian Symposium: Mary the Mother of Jesus; a time of fellowship and sharing, in which we can explore the riches of devotion to and veneration of Mary.

Mary holds a place of honour and love in both Muslim and Christian traditions, and this symposium offers a time to learn from one another and share perspectives. At a time in which it seems easier to focus on discord, and in which global tragedy sharpens the differences between communities, we propose this time spent together as a commitment to mutual understanding and to strive to look to what builds our communities in harmony.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Dr. Margaret Barker, author of Temple Theology, on the infancy narratives in the Gospels.
  • Shaykh Arif Abdul Hussain, Director and Senior Lecturer in uṣūl al-fiqh and Muslim Philosophy, Al-Mahdi Institute, on 'Mary as the custodian of the Divine Word.'

- Sister Safia Tharoo - Barrister, Executive Committee Member of Husaini Shia Islamic Centre, on 'Mary in her own right.’
  • The Right Reverend Dr. Martin Warner, Bishop of Chichester, on 'Mary and the Cross.'

Our talks will include a time of fellowship and food, in which different groups here in Small Heath will offer dishes from the exciting cuisines of our diverse communities.

We look forward, if you are able to join us, to welcoming you for our talks in Small Heath.

Yours sincerely,

Fr Anthony Murley
