Bishop's Comment: The vibrant city of Birmingham

The city of Birmingham has a way of surprising visitors with its vibrant city centre, commercial and retail activity second only to London, widespread sport, theatre and music, hundreds of local communities and a diverse population of over a million people from all over the world. Birmingham can be an incredible place to live, work and play, but it can also be a challenging environment, with transient communities and areas of great poverty.

Our urban setting gives the Christian Church many opportunities to serve and witness within and across cultures in the varied environments we are situated in.

In November I am delighted that Birmingham will be hosting its first ever Urban Congress where people from around our region will be meeting to share their stories and discuss the realities of being the Christian Church in an urban setting. We are also giving a further impetus to Love Your Neighbour with a Week of Kindness to encourage everyone across our city to be extra extra extra kind this November.

I expect that Christians will join in these initiatives and enable more and more of our fellow citizens to hear about and respond to the love of God in the Lord Jesus.
