Revd Canon Catherine Grylls has been appointed as the new Warden of Readers for the Church of England - Birmingham. The Warden of Readers is appointed by the Bishop and has general oversight of over 200 Readers within the Diocese.
Catherine has worked as curate and vicar in Hall Green, Balsall Heath and Edgbaston and is currently Area Dean of Moseley, although will be stepping down from this role in the autumn. She has always had a passion for encouraging lay ministry and discipleship and is interested in nurturing collaborative leadership between clergy and lay members of the Church.
About her appointment, Catherine said: "It is a real privilege to take on this new role and it will be a joy to discover more of the riches of Reader ministry within the Church of England - Birmingham. Celebrating and encouraging lay ministry has always been something dear to my heart and I look forward to building on the good work done by Martin Stephenson. My vision for the church is one where licensed ministers, both lay and ordained, share in ministry together in ways that rejoice in our difference and yet also value our mutuality. I look forward to taking a part in encouraging vocations to Reader ministry, in supporting Reader ministry and in shaping the future of Reader ministry within our Diocese."
Catherine's new role as Warden will start gradually next week, when she will also be instituted as vicar of the Church of the Ascension in Stirchley. She will handover from Martin, her predecessor, over the summer, before beginning the role in earnest in September 2017.
