Transforming Church - Shaping the Future Announcement

In 2017 we received a grant from the Church Commissioners towards a new phase of our Transforming Church vision, building on all the good work done since 2009.

This funding has enabled us to resource new roles, which are focused on enabling and equipping individuals, parishes and the Church of England - Birmingham as a whole to engage with the new opportunities and challenges before us. We are thrilled to be welcoming the following people over January and February this year:

Mark Berry: Fresh Expressions Enabler (Mission Learning & Development Team)

Mark will be supporting parishes in their mission to reach new people in new places in new ways. In particular, he will help us grow new Christian communities amongst those with whom the Church finds it harder to connect.

Gillian Sheail: Mentors Facilitator (Mission Learning & Development Team) (PT)

Mentoring is vital in leadership development. Gillian will help us build a culture of widespread mentoring across the Diocese; supporting and encouraging lay and ordained leaders.

Sharon Prentis: Dean of BAME Affairs (PT) and Intercultural Mission Enabler (PT) (Mission Learning & Development Team)

We would love our Church leadership to better reflect the ethnic diversity that Birmingham is blessed with. Sharon will work on encouraging BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) ministry and vocations in our superdiverse region. She is combining this role with another part time role as Intercultural Mission Enabler; further strengthening the work of parishes, groups and individuals ministering within distinct communities and cultural groupings.

Steve Cook: Project Manager (Finance Team)

Steve is supporting our teams in planning and evaluating the difference they will make in this new phase of Transforming Church, as well as helping to manage project budgets.

Peter Cozens: Training & Development Support Officer (HR Team)
Harriet O’Hara: Training & Development Support Officer (HR Team)

We are also delighted to be welcoming a new Mission Apprentice Coordinator, in a role funded by the Allchurches Trust:

Lizzie Gawen: Mission Apprentice Coordinator (PT) (Mission Learning & Development Team)
Lizzie will be looking after our Mission Apprentices: new, missional lay leaders based in parishes in more deprived areas of the Diocese.

About the appointments, Bishop Anne said: “It’s wonderful to see such a talented team coming together under the leadership of Dr Paula Gooder as our Director of Mission Learning and Development, and to welcome new members of staff supporting the important area of training and development in general. Their work will, I’m sure, bring fresh inspiration as well as new learning opportunities to all of us who are seeking to be faithful to God’s call to pass on the faith to the next generation.”
