Appointment of a new Diocesan Secretary

The Bishop of Birmingham and the Chair of the Birmingham Diocesan Board of Finance (BDBF) are delighted to announce, after an extensive recruitment and discernment process, the appointment of a new Diocesan Secretary from 1st January 2020. Dr Jan Smart will be taking over from Andrew Halstead who retires at the end of this year after nine years in post.

Jan has been HR Director of the Church of England Birmingham since 2015. Prior to this, she was CEO of the Renewal Christian Centre in Solihull for seven years and previously held various senior management roles at Cadbury, including: Sales Analysis, Strategic Planning, Business Development, Finance, Training & Development and HR. Her extensive business experience will play an important role in supporting our strategic planning and development as part of our Transforming Church vision.

Steven Skakel, Chair of BDBF says: "Jan has been a member of the senior leadership team that has worked tirelessly to resource, develop and encourage Christian mission and ministry across The Church of England Birmingham for the past four years.We have evaluated and discerned that Jan is called to this role and that she will flourish in God’s strength.I am looking forward to working with her as we continue our journey."

I know that Jan’s considerable business experience, high-level leadership skills and personal faith commitment will be invaluable for her colleagues and the wider church in Birmingham."
