Pathways - Lifelong discipleship; flexible learning; flourishing teams

Pathways is an initiative to support leadership development for lay and clergy which is aligned with the six Deaneries within the People and Places framework and is funded by the Church Commissioners.

This is an exciting phase of development in the Pathways approach to learning which includes coaching for those either currently in or moving into lay and ordained leadership, with mentoring alongside learning. Through the Pathways approach to flexible learning, we are seeking to provide opportunity for every Christian and church community in the Church of England Birmingham family to grow in their capacity to live out the Good News of Jesus, equip them for serving Him and be servant leaders in every sphere of life.

Guided by local parishes across the six Deaneries, Pathways will present fresh ways of learning for those who want to engage and grow as disciples and open new paths to fruitful lay and ordained leadership and ministry. Every Christian community will have a trained and supported pastoral minister and a well-equipped, flourishing team.

Pathways builds on Flex, a learning pathway for all interested in mission and ministry with young people, children and families and young adults. Created by the Parish Mission Support Team, Flex has been piloted as an online platform and we are now poised to extend the concept to Pathways so that we can develop an increasingly wider and richer offering of modules and other learning opportunities.

In addition to Flex, Pathways will offer supported learning paths to Reader Ministry, Evangelism, Local Ministry, Pastoral Care and many more licensed and commissioned ministries. We are also developing pathways which will help us all grow as disciples. The ‘Way of Discipleship’ and ‘Way of Servant Leadership’ are due to begin later this year.

These two pathways will offer flexible ways of growing disciples, starting with five core modules – Being with God, Becoming Like Christ, Joining in with the Spirit, Knowing the Story and Servant Leadership.  They can be all done in one year or spread over a longer period.  While they will be offered in hubs, the materials will all be available on the Pathways online platform to be used by church communities for groups or one-to-one discipleship.  They will be formational – shaping disciples through a combination of content, modelling and practice. There will be more information and an opportunity to express your interest in joining the Way of Discipleship and Way of Servant Leadership in the July Bulletin…
