The Bishop's Comment: A time to pause

31st May 2022

4000 is the number on the cover of a book by Oliver Burkeman sub-titled 'time management for mortals'. He is referring to the weeks a human might be expected to live. In my case I have already used 3,636 with only 364 to go!

The main point is to pause and reckon what is life-giving and what is unfruitful in the weekly round.

This month the nation celebrates Her Majesty the Queen's Platinum Jubilee and a life that sets a remarkable example of devoted service. Long May she reign.

The special holidays coincide with the Christian celebration of a unique Pentecost festival in Jerusalem 2000 years ago.

The lives of the followers of Jesus Christ, disrupted by their Lord's agonising death and supernatural resurrection, were to be transformed with a further revelation from God, for which they had to 'wait in the city' (Acts 1&2)

That revelation was 'power from on high' demonstrated by an outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

Please pause  in whatever you are doing or being and be ready for the transformation that God has prepared for each person.

Most of us will not have the allocation of time given to the Queen but we can be encouraged by her example of humble prayer, and honest witness to the Saviour of the World.

Thanks be to God.
