People at ordination services 2016

Who We Are

We are people from all walks of life who love God, follow Jesus and have made Birmingham our home. Most people in the Church of England – Birmingham are ordinary church members (also known as ‘lay people’) who attend their local church and are part of its community. Many church members have a specific role in their parish church. Sometimes these are paid roles, but many are voluntary. Everyone has a part to play, from flower-arranging to music to youth work.

Churches

Most churches are led by members of the clergy. These are people such as vicars, priests, deacons and others who have received specific training in church ministry. This training is called ' ordination'. Once the person has completed the training they are referred to as 'ordained'.

Below you can meet Ivor, who was ordained in 2016:

Diocesan staff

Some people work across the whole Diocese, rather than in a specific parish church. The Bishop of Birmingham, David Urquhart, leads the Church of England - Birmingham, along with the Bishop of Aston, Anne Hollinghurst. There are also teams who support work across the whole Diocese, such as Finance, Education, Property, Communications and others.
