The Rt. Revd Anne Hollinghurst, Bishop of Aston, Acting Bishop of Birmingham
Bishop Anne was consecrated as the tenth Bishop of Aston in September 2015. She is Suffragan Bishop at the Church of England Birmingham and has particular episcopal responsibility in the areas of mission, vocations and ministry. She has been authorised by the Archbishop of Canterbury as commissary bishop or ‘Acting Bishop’ of Birmingham until the installation of the new Bishop of Birmingham, The Rt. Revd Dr. Michael Volland.
She grew up in the North West, moving away to university where she first began to sense a vocation to ordained ministry. On getting married and moving to West Sussex, she spent five formative years as a youth worker and pastoral assistant at her local church, before taking up full-time youth work in Hyson Green / Old Basford - an inner urban area of Nottingham.
Since ordination she has served as curate at St Saviour in the Meadows, Nottingham, an urban estate parish; Chaplain and Religious Studies lecturer at the University of Derby – where she was also a founding Director of the University’s Multi-Faith Centre; Chaplain of Derby Cathedral; Residentiary Canon of Manchester Cathedral and Chaplain to the Bishop of Manchester. Her previous post before moving to Birmingham was as vicar of the busy city centre parish of St Peter’s, St Albans, where she led a growing church made up of both traditional and fresh expressions congregations.
She has been a member of General Synod, alongside a variety of other diocesan portfolio roles in the areas of mission, leadership, education, worship and spirituality. She is one of the bishops on the Faith and Order Commission of the Church of England and has particular interests currently in the church’s engagement with further education, housing and modern slavery.
She holds a theology degree from the University of Bristol and a MSt from Cambridge University in Jewish-Christian relations. Her husband, Steve, is also ordained and part of the Mission Team for Lichfield Diocese with a focus on mission and the environment. For relaxation they both enjoy theatre, reading, music, gardening, walking – especially anywhere with hills!
