Church of England Birmingham hosts first Open Day

Today, 26 February 2026, Church of England Birmingham opened its doors at John Cadbury House to clergy and church leaders for its first-ever Open Day.

The day brought together Bishops, Archdeacons, Diocesan colleagues and parish representatives to offer an exciting picture of what it means to serve in Birmingham, and to explore the range of opportunities emerging across our churches.

The morning began with refreshments, followed by prayer.

Bishop of Birmingham Michael Volland and Bishop of Aston Esther Prior outlined the Diocesan vision and strategy of Growing churches at the heart of each community. Presentations focused on the four strategic themes of leadership, sustainability, parish growth and revitalisation – all underpinned by prayer.

Interfaith Director Canon Dr Andrew Smith discussed the support available for Presence & Engagement parishes, highlighting the diversity of Birmingham and the significance of interfaith work in the area.

Guests heard about the various current and upcoming opportunities across Birmingham and the region, in a range of parish contexts, from Archdeacon Jenny Tomlinson and Head of Revitalisations Edd Stock.

Throughout the presentations, speakers set out a hopeful picture of the kinds of leadership roles emerging, the contexts they serve, and the opportunities they present for growth, mission and formation.

Lunch provided space for informal conversations, with diocesan colleagues on hand to answer questions and build connections.

The afternoon session offered personal testimony from a panel of speakers. Through interviews and Q&A, parish leaders and Diocesan staff spoke honestly about the joys and challenges of ministry in Birmingham, and about the support they have experienced.

The day closed in prayer and thanksgiving, with attendees invited to sign up for follow-up conversations as they continue to discern next steps.
