Bishop Michael is delighted to announce the appointment of Jan Savage as Warden of Commissioned Pastoral Teams for the Church of England Birmingham. Jan is Reader in the parish of St Bernard’s Hamstead, and a CME Adviser on the CPT steering group.
Jan’s professional background is in nursing; she recently retired as Clinical Lead for Birmingham School Nurses, and is also very much involved in the Girlguiding Movement, currently leader of the Brownie Pack at St Bernard’s.
Bishop Michael writes,
”I am delighted that Jan as Warden of Commissioned Pastoral Teams. Her theological and pastoral gifts as a lay minister, and skills in clinical leadership and strategic planning within the NHS, will be a blessing to the ministry of pastoral care across the diocese. Jan is succeeding David Harrison in the role, and I want also to pay tribute to David who has done a superb job as Warden, developing Pastoral Teams as part of our reimagining of ministry. I wish him a fulfilling retirement ministry alongside Penny in Stratford-on-Avon.”
Jan says of her new role,
“After forty years in nursing and clinical leadership I am very much looking forward to this new role as part of my Reader ministry. It offers me challenge and opportunity in supporting lay people and ordained colleagues in developing pastoral care ministry in parishes and oversight areas. Our teams are making a wonderful contribution to fullness of life in Christ’s name for people in local neighbourhoods, promoting wellbeing and spiritual care where there is so much hidden loneliness, sorrow and hurt as well as joy and celebration.”
Jan will work with the CPT Steering Group and colleagues in the Ministries Team, whilst continuing her Reader ministry at St Bernard’s Hamstead. She will be commissioned by Bishop Esther at the annual Day of Encouragement for Commissioned Pastoral Teams at St George’s Newtown on Saturday 7th June.
There are currently 38 Commissioned Pastoral Teams in the diocese, with over 125 lay people working alongside clergy and Readers in offering the ministry of pastoral care and nurture. To find out more about CPTs, please contact RuthiL@cofebirmingham.com
